Why Does My Car Pull to the Right?

A slight rightward drift is usually normal — public roads are crowned so rainwater drains to the shoulder, and your lane slopes right. A genuine pull, where the wheel fights your hands on flat pavement, is mechanical: uneven tire pressure, a seized brake caliper, alignment out of spec, or worn suspension underneath.

Two hands-on checks separate a harmless road-crown drift from a real pull — then the tire, brake, alignment, and suspension causes, and which to rule out first.

The first question is whether your car is pulling at all. Two different problems wear the same symptom, and the checks below separate them before you spend anything.

Once you know it’s the car, the causes fall in a rough order and the cheap ones are the most common — with one exception. A clunk, a wandering wheel, or a pull that appeared suddenly is a suspension symptom, and that jumps the queue.

Road crown: why some rightward drift is normal

Before you book anything, rule out the pavement. Most roads are built with a crown — a slight cross-slope, higher down the center, so rainwater runs off to the shoulder instead of standing in your lane. Because traffic keeps right, your wheels usually sit on the right-falling side of that slope. Gravity does the rest.

Two checks tell a harmless drift from a real pull. Do both with your hands on the wheel — never test a pull by letting go of it.

  • Find flat ground. An empty, level lot takes the road’s slope out of the equation. Keep a light, steady hold and see whether the car wanders or settles.
  • Feel the effort. A crown drift is lazy, correctable with a fingertip. A genuine pull is insistent, and you notice you’re bracing against it.

Ignore the lane-change test you’ll see elsewhere — moving left should supposedly reverse the drift. Divided highways are often crowned at the median instead, so both lanes fall right and the result tells you nothing.

If the car settles on flat ground, the pavement was probably doing it — though a fault that only shows at highway speed, under braking, or with a loaded car won’t appear in a parking lot.

Start with the tires

If the pull survives the flat lot, check your tires first. It’s free, and it’s the most common answer.

  • Uneven pressure. A right front tire carrying less air than the left drags like a soft anchor and steers the car toward itself. Check all four cold, since heat from a few miles hides the difference.
  • Conicity. Build variation can leave a tire slightly cone-shaped as it rolls, producing a steady sideways push no alignment will cancel. It usually shows up right after new tires or a rotation, when the tire reaches the steering axle.
  • Uneven wear. A tire scrubbed unevenly by an old alignment problem can pull on its own. Swap the two front tires side to side — if the pull reverses, the problem rides on that corner. That implicates the tire and the wheel, so a bent rim stays on the list, and directional tires have to go back the right way round.

A brake that never lets go

A brake dragging on the right front wheel pulls the car straight toward that corner. Timing is the usual clue: an alignment pull is constant, while a brake pull tends to show up or sharpen the moment you touch the pedal. Take that as a strong hint, not proof — a car can have both.

Salt air usually causes it here. On the floating calipers most cars use, the caliper slides on pins to release the pad; when those pins corrode and seize, the pad never fully lets go. That drags the car right, burns through the pad, and puts real heat into the brake — often with a burning smell, or a right wheel dirtier and hotter than its twin. Alignment: camber, caster, and toe

With pressures matched and the brakes releasing cleanly, geometry is next. Wheel alignment sets the angles at which your tires meet the road. Three matter here:

  • Camber is how far the top of the wheel tilts in or out, seen from the front. When one side carries more positive camber than the other, the car pulls that way.
  • Caster is the tilt of the steering axis, seen from the side. The car pulls toward whichever side has less positive caster.
  • Toe is whether the tires point slightly toward or away from each other, seen from above. Toe error is the classic cause of feathered tread wear, and unequal front toe is the usual reason a wheel sits crooked while the car tracks straight — though a rear thrust angle that’s off does it too.

None of this can be judged by eye — it takes a rack measuring each angle against your vehicle’s factory numbers.

What holds an alignment: bushings, ball joints, tie rods

An alignment sets your angles. Worn parts let them wander back out, which is why aligning a car with bad hardware underneath is a repair with an expiration date — an unpredictable one, since the angles move whenever the worn part does.

  • Control-arm bushings are the rubber sleeves cushioning the control arms against the frame. Heat and age crack or collapse them, the arm shifts as you drive, and the angles go with it.
  • Ball joints are the pivots connecting control arm to steering knuckle. Worn ones can give play, vague steering, and a clunk over bumps — but don’t read a quiet car as a clear one, because a joint can be dangerously worn in silence. That’s why it gets inspected rather than listened for. A failed ball joint is a genuine safety problem.
  • Tie rods carry your steering to the wheels. Worn ends wander and won’t hold a line, and a badly failed end can separate outright and take your steering with it.

So the suspension and steering get inspected as part of the job and worn parts replaced before the angles are set — suspension work moves those angles anyway, so alignment belongs after it.

Why Brevard County is hard on alignments

The Space Coast wears out the exact parts that hold your alignment.

  • Heat and humidity harden and crack the rubber bushings and strut mounts that hold the geometry where it was set.
  • Salt air corrodes tie-rod threads, ball joints, and chassis hardware — worst near the barrier islands, though nowhere inland is exempt.
  • Storm potholes. Summer rain chews up pavement along US-1 and Wickham Road, and one deep hole or clipped curb can knock angles out of spec or bend a tie rod.
  • No winter break. Cars here run year-round, so the wear never pauses.
